Twelve Days of Wellness: A Holiday Countdown for a Healthier You

Couple of senior men walking on the street in winter time, having a cup of coffee. Friends having a morning exercise. Both wearing outdoor winter clothes. One man wearing a scarf with pink (Pantone 227C) colour plaid pattern. Exterior of city street in winter with light snow.

The hustle and bustle of the holiday season can be stressful. There are presents to buy, parties to host, travels to plan, and people to see. It’s easy to forget about taking care of ourselves during the busy season. This December, join our (unofficial) Twelve Days of Wellness challenge to stay physically, mentally, and socially well in the busiest time of the year.

Whether you’re strolling around Providence to look at holiday displays or looking for ways to stay active in your independent living apartment, this unofficial challenge offers simple ways to care for yourself and enjoy the season.

Day 1-2: Move just a little every day

Staying active helps your body and your mood. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), older adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week. On days 1 and 2, try:

  • Taking a 20-minute walk while shopping at Providence Place
  • Walk around the block a few times if it isn’t too cold or icy outside
  • Find a simple chair yoga, tai chi, or dance workout video online
  • Join us for a group exercise activity

Day 3-4: Hydrate and balance your meals

Holiday gatherings often come with rich foods and treats. While it’s wonderful to enjoy them, giving your body what it needs helps keep you strong and comfortable. At family meals, aim to fill your plate with mostly meats and vegetables. Try starting a meal by raising a glass of water or herbal tea as a toast. In your own kitchen, cook lots of healthy meals to balance the hearty holiday treats. Fill a festive holiday-themed water bottle to keep with you all day.

Day 5-6: Make time to rest

The holiday season can be lively! Between errands, visits from friends, and travelling, it’s easy to overdo it. Your body still needs downtime, even in the hustle and bustle of the holidays. After a morning of activity or socializing, allow yourself an easy afternoon. Read a book, listen to music, or take a short nap. Good rest supports your immune system, your mood, and your sense of calm. Think of it as quiet fuel that helps you shine when the next gathering comes along.

Day 7-8: Connect with loved ones

Friendship and community bring joy. A phone call to an out-of-town loved one, a chat with a neighbor over coffee, or joining a holiday event at Charlesgate can boost your spirits and your sense of belonging. Research shows social connection protects mental health and can slow cognitive decline. Choosing to reach out, even briefly, becomes a wellness act.

Day 9-10: Enjoy the little moments

Wellness doesn’t need to mean big changes. Sometimes it’s the small things, such as a cup of tea by the window, listening to a favorite song, or stepping outside to stroll past holiday decorations. These moments anchor you in the present and bring a gentle joy to your day. Look around your community, pick one simple delight, and let it brighten your season.

Day 11-12: Reflect and recharge

The last days of our wellness challenge are dedicated to slowing down and reflecting. Take a few quiet moments to think about what brought you joy this season and what you’re grateful for. Try journaling, listening to calming music, or meditation. Reflection can help reduce stress and improve emotional health. Wellness is just as much about pausing as it is about doing.

Staying well during the holidays isn’t about perfection; it’s about balance. Enjoy the treats, rest when you need to, and keep moving in ways that feel good. With community, laughter, and care, this season can be your healthiest yet.

Here’s wishing you a holiday season filled with connection, calm, and well-being. Let’s make this one not just happy—but healthy too.
