How to Enjoy Every Bit of Summer in Providence

Senior woman with her grandsons on the 4th of July

July is one of the best times to be in Rhode Island. The Fourth of July is right around the corner, WaterFire is lighting up the river, outdoor concerts are in full swing, and the parks are full of life. This summer is extra special, with America’s 250th birthday celebrations and FIFA World Cup fan events giving everyone even more reasons to get outside. Living in Providence means all of this is practically in your backyard.

Keep the fun going while staying safe with the following tips.

Fourth of July events around the city (and beyond)

There are many ways to celebrate America’s independence:

Tips for a great parade day

Parades are one of the best parts of Independence Day, but they mean long stretches of time in the sun. A little prep goes a long way:

  • Get there early to find a shady spot along the route before the crowds fill in.
  • Bring a chair so you are not standing on hot pavement for hours.
  • Apply sunscreen before you head out and reapply every two hours.
  • Pack the essentials: water, sunscreen, and a snack, all in a small bag you can carry easily.
  • Invite a neighbor, friend, or loved one along. Having someone with you makes the day better and means you always have a helping hand nearby.

Stay cool in the heat

Some simple tricks make a big difference on a hot summer day.

  • Drink water throughout the day, even if you are not thirsty.
  • Wear light-colored, loose clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Step inside somewhere cool between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Charlesgate’s common spaces are a great place to recharge between outings.
  • Check the weather before you head out.
  • Consider bringing a mister or handheld fan.
  • Know the signs of heat exhaustion: dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating, and muscle cramps. If someone seems confused or loses consciousness, call 911.

Pack smart for picnics and outdoor dining

Roger Williams Park, Waterplace Park, and India Point Park are all wonderful spots for a summer picnic. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Keep food in a cooler and out of the sun. Do not leave perishables out for more than an hour or two, since bacteria multiply fast in hot weather.
  • Freeze water bottles to keep in the cooler along with ice packs to make sure there is a chilled drink waiting for you.
  • If you are grilling, keep the grill away from structures and overhanging branches, and never leave it unattended.

Stay for the fireworks

Evening events such as WaterFire and fireworks are absolutely worth sticking around for.

  • Stick to public fireworks displays. Providence and Bristol both put on a great show, and it is the safest way to enjoy the holiday.
  • Bring a light jacket. It can cool off quickly near the water once the sun goes down.
  • Pack bug spray if you are spending time near the river or parks.
  • If you are sensitive to noise, bring earplugs or stand a comfortable distance back for fireworks, concerts, or parades.
  • Keep sunscreen on through the early evening. UV rays linger past sunset.

Plan your ride home

The Fourth of July is one of the busiest travel days of the year, and roads get congested after evening events. A little planning makes getting home easy:

  • Arrange transportation before the day, whether that is a family member, a rideshare, or carpooling with a neighbor.
  • Consider public transportation to avoid traffic.
  • If you are driving, leave a little early or wait until the rush dies down.
  • Have an address ready for your driver or GPS before you leave.

Rhode Island in July is a wonderful place to be. If you are curious about what life at Charlesgate looks like during the best months of the year, we would love to show you around.
