At Charlesgate, we believe that aging well means living fully—exploring your city, connecting with others, and enjoying the little moments that bring joy. And what better time to embrace that spirit than during a Rhode Island summer?

Whether you’re enjoying a peaceful stroll, discovering a new favorite café, or watching the sun set over the water, summer in Providence offers endless ways to stay active, engaged, and happy in independent living. That’s why we’re launching a “Summer of Fun” challenge—a playful list of 10 local adventures to try this summer.

You don’t need to do all 10. Pick the ones that sound fun, snap a photo if you’d like, and let yourself enjoy the season at your own pace. Charlesgate residents already know: Wellness isn’t just about routines—it’s about living well, right where you are.

☀️ Your Summer of Fun Challenge:

☕ Grab a coffee somewhere new. Meeting a friend for coffee or chatting with your barista keeps you socially connected—a key part of healthy aging.

Try: Seven Stars Bakery, Bolt Coffee, or Rise and Shine Coffee Bar, all nice walks or a short bus ride from Charlesgate.

🌳 Have a picnic in Roger Williams Park. Getting outside for a meal boosts your mood and helps you enjoy fresh air, sunshine, and movement—all great for mental and physical health.

Pack something simple or grab something from a café nearby, find a shady spot near the Temple to Music, and relax with friends or a good book.

🌸 Visit a garden or quiet green space. Spending time in nature can lower stress and improve focus, and walking even short distances helps maintain mobility.
The Roger Williams Botanical Center is air-conditioned and beautiful year-round. Prefer fresh air? Check out one of the many parks in Providence, such as India Point Park.

🎶 Attend a free summer concert or event. Live events stimulate the brain, encourage movement, and offer a fun, low-pressure way to socialize.
From WaterFire to festivals and celebrations downtown, there’s always something happening in Providence.

🍦 Treat yourself to a frozen dessert. Small pleasures, like enjoying a sweet treat on a hot day, contribute to emotional wellness and help you savor the moment. Plus, who doesn’t love ice cream?
Cool down with a visit to Three Sisters, Tricycle Ice Cream, or Like No Udder for dairy-free treats.

📚 Browse a local bookstore or library. Reading supports cognitive health, and exploring new places keeps your sense of curiosity and independence alive.
Explore Symposium Books or visit the Rochambeau Library for a fresh summer read and a cozy, cool reading spot.

🖼️ Visit a museum or gallery. Cultural outings provide gentle mental stimulation, creativity, and inspiration—all while staying cool indoors.
The RISD Museum is just minutes from Charlesgate and offers free admission on Sundays—plus air conditioning and plenty of quiet corners to enjoy on those hot, Rhode Island summer days.

🧺 Shop fresh at a farmers market. Picking up fresh, local produce encourages healthy eating and gives you a chance to chat with vendors and neighbors.
Hope Street and Armory Park farmers markets are full of seasonal produce, flowers, and locally made goodies.

🚶 Explore a different neighborhood. Walking helps maintain balance and strength, and discovering new views keeps life exciting and rewarding. Plus, you never know what you’ll find!
