5 Tips for Summer Senior Travel

School’s out and the days call for exploration and adventure. But summer vacation isn’t just for kids and their parents. For independent seniors, it can be a vital ritual for a vibrant and fulfilling lifestyle.

Travel can keep one young with new experiences, expanded horizons, and cherished memories. Nearly two-thirds of Americans 50 and over planned to travel this year, with most taking family trips and nearly one-third willing to go “off the beaten path.” Studies have shown that seniors who travel experience physical and mental health benefits. Done right, travel can reduce stress levels, increase cognitive stimulation, and enhance overall well-being. In fact, according to a recent study in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health,  “…traveling, and the number of trips undertaken, significantly reduce the risk of death among seniors.”

Here are 5 tips that can help you have a relaxing and meaningful excursion:

  1. Plan ahead. Research your destination thoroughly and make necessary arrangements in advance. In addition to thinking about accommodations and transportation, consider possible medical needs (including travel health insurance) and eating habits. You don’t want to be a vegetarian stuck with meat-only options – or vice versa.
  1. Pack wisely. Lighten your load by packing only the essentials and investing in travel-friendly accessories, such as lightweight luggage and portable mobility aids. Think about bringing a notebook or using an app on your smartphone to write down reminders, like your metro stop or a hotel’s address. One trick to packing lighter: doing your laundry while on the road.
  1. Stay active. Incorporate physical activity into your travel itinerary by seeing the sites, exploring parks and trails, or participating in guided tours. Try to go late in the day to avoid crowds and high temperatures. But be wary of overscheduling! Including a day to relax, whether in the spa or with room service, is perfectly acceptable.
  1. Stay connected. Maintain communication with loved ones back home by bringing along a smartphone or tablet. With internet access, you can share your adventures and stay updated on important news. Send postcards to friends and family as a cost-effective and fun way to inspire travel. Do not post on social media about your vacation until you are home—no need to broadcast to potential burglars that you are away.
  1. Prioritize safety. Be vigilant while traveling and take precautions to ensure your safety. Of course, keep your belongings secure, remain aware of your surroundings, and avoid risky situations. But also think about your health: Bring all required medications, follow public health guidelines (including vaccinations), and carry emergency contact and medical information.

BONUS Tip: Always ask about discounts – even if you don’t see posted information. Many tourist spots have reduced rates for seniors, although the age and proof requirements may vary.

Not every adventure requires a passport or a plane ticket. Here are some cost-saving staycation ideas for independent seniors to enjoy:

  • Hit the local tourist hotspots. Discover hidden gems in your own backyard by visiting museums, art galleries, botanical gardens, or historical landmarks. If you can, join a tour so you get the full tourist experience. Don’t forget to buy a souvenir.
  • Go on a progressive culinary journey. Experience other cultures through the international language of food. Seek out Asian, African, European, Middle Eastern or South American restaurants and visit over successive days or weekends. Invite loved ones to make it a family global adventure without jet lag.
  • Visit vicariously with movie magic. Find shows and movies that feature your destination of choice, get comfortable, and immerse yourself in technicolor. Miss the beaches of Hawaii? Watch Pearl Harbor for the history, Blue Hawaii for the kitsch and beach, or 50 First Dates for the romance. Prefer a tour of Europe? Find a movie based in each city you’d like to see.

Summer is the perfect time for seniors to embark on new adventures. Whether you are jet-setting to exotic destinations or enjoying the simple pleasures of a staycation, remember to savor every moment and embrace the joy of summer travel.
